Narration in Series and Matrices

Some excerpts from Bernard Tschumi's famous Manhattan Transcripts. What is a transcript? How do these representations tell about the space and the event which takes place ? The whole thing is an attempt to narrate a murder/murders in New York City. The event takes place in a park, in a block, in a tower, ... How are the frames used?

From Tschumi:

"... The role of the Transcripts is never to represent; they are not mimetic. So, at the same time, the buildings and events depicted are not real buildings or events, for distancing and subjectivity are also themes of the transcription. Thus the reality of its sequences does not lie in the accurate transposition of the outside world, but in the internal logic these sequences display." Bernard Tschumi, The Manhattan Transcripts, St. Martin’s press (1981),

"... A program is never neutral. The people who draft it are full of preconceptions. The first thing an architect needs to do is dismantle that program and redirect it. As an architect, you need to have an agenda….Events are different from programs. A program relies on repetition and habit; it can be written down and be prescriptive. In contrast, an event occurs unexpectedly, but you do not design the event. " -Bernard Tschumi, Praxis, Issue 8
